If there is one project you will be thankful for taking on before a move itís a giant declutter session. Or even sessions. It doesnít matter how many it takes you, getting rid of the stuff that just sits around taking up space and collecting dust feels liberating.

Because stuff is more than just stuff. Everything comes with a reason or attachment that is keeping us from letting go. Even your cell phone from 2012 that youíve been planning to recycle responsibly for years.

Sometimes the ďjunkĒ we collect in drawers and boxes has a lot more to say about us than the more sentimental items like holey t-shirts and ticket stubs.

But donít worry we wonít go there. Instead, here are four different tactics for getting the clutter out before moving day. Because less stuff means fewer boxes, less to carry and less unpacking.

Letís start with the most extreme, what would you do if you had to start over from scratch? If you couldnít take anything with you what would you need to run out and replace ASAP? What are the non-negotiables that make your life yours?

Alternatively, schedule small bursts throughout the next few weeks where you tackle decluttering room by room. Breaking down a total declutter into smaller projects makes it easier to wrap our brains around. Iíd recommend tackling one room per weekend.

If youíre finding that breaking up your declutter room by room is too overwhelming, hereís a different technique. Plan a few days a week where you set a timer for just an hour or two to go through one junk drawer/closet/bookshelf at a time. This works because it puts an immediate end in sight that you can quite literally count down to.

Struggling with what to keep and what to toss?

Consider how often do you actually use the item in question. If itís of sentimental value how often do you pull it out to reminisce? Did you think to yourself ďWow! I totally forgot about thisĒ? What value does this item add to your day to day to life? If the answer is rarely to never, itís time to let go.

Sort items into the classic four box system. Create four boxes or piles: keep, donate, pack away, toss. And then, once everything is sorted, take action! Actually, donate those items. Toss out your collections of dead pens and old cell phones.  

Or box everything up, bring it with you to the new place and toss or donate anything you havenít unpacked within a month. With the exception of seasonal items, of course. The downside here is that youíre still going to have to pack it all up and move. But itís a less extreme version of imagining you are starting over from scratch.

Moving to a new home can be a stressful time for a new homeowner. Packing up a house-full of belongings is a strenuous process that can take up a lot of time and energy. And, if youíre working with movers, youíre going to have to pay for everything you want to move.

One way to make the process of moving easier and to save some money is by listing some of your unwanted belongings for sale online.

There are a number of places to list your unwanted items, but some are better than others when it comes to heavy and bulk items.

When to start listing and selling

The best time to begin the process of listing and selling some of your bulk items is at least two months before your move.

Why so long?

The answer lies in how much time it takes to list items, field responses, and ship the items or meet up with the buyer for pickup.

To list your items, youíll want to do some research on them to find out the brand name, year, condition, and model number for things like large televisions. Youíll then want to see what the items are selling for used online.

Once you have a price in mind, youíll want to take some high quality photos of the items. Good lighting and a decent camera (a newer smartphone camera should suffice).

Next comes the process of listing. Regardless of where you list your items, youíll want to make sure you provide as many details as possible. This will help provide the site youíre using with enough keywords to make your items show up in popular searches. It will also help reduce the number of questions you receive from buyers who want to know more about the item--the listing should tell them everything they need to know to make a purchase.

Where to list

For large items that would be costly to ship, itís best to use local listing services like Craigslist and Facebook groups. However, donít give out too many details (like your address or date of moving); you donít want to tip off would-be scammers or thieves to the fact that youíre moving.

For smaller items that still carry some value, a site like eBay or Amazon can produce top value for your belongings. Just factor in shipping costs and the chance of returns into the price.

Tips for success

One of the reasons I recommend listing your items months in advance of your move is because it can take time to list your items, field inquiries, then finally ship them and receive your payment.

One way to ensure that you successfully sell your items is to stay on top of inquiries. That means making yourself available whenever possible to take phone calls and answering email questions.

If you follow these steps, you should be able to turn a profit off of the items you would have otherwise had to pay to move. Happy moving, and good luck!

Moving to a new home is both an exciting and stressful time. Thereís nothing quite like a fresh start in a new place. Itís a blank canvas just waiting for you to make your mark. Itís just that there is also a lot of stuff to move! And for fish owners there comes the added complexity of how to move the carefully acclimated ecosystem of their aquatic pets.

While moving fish is not as simple as loading them into a carrier with their favorite blanket or toy itís not an impossible task. And Iím sure you donít need reminding how temperamental fish are to their environment. Because they are so easily upset I highly recommend setting a day aside dedicated solely to moving your aquarium. Ideally, your fish will spend as little time as possible outside of their familiar habitat.  

Before you begin disassembling your tank youíll want to have the place you would like it to be located in your new home already picked out. This way you can have a plan of action to put into place as soon as you pull into the driveway. Youíll also want to make sure you have the proper supplies for moving your tank. 

Check in your local aquarium shop for advice on how to move your specific type of fish. Youíll also want to pick up some bags like those your fish are placed in when you first bring them home, a battery operated pump, a fish net, a few 5-gallon buckets with lids and a siphon hose if you donít already own one. Be sure to bring home as many bags as fish you own. Youíll also want to pick up or borrow a cooler that would fit your bagged fish if you donít have one. 

To preserve as much of the vital bacteria in your tankís ecosystem you will want to siphon as most of your tank water into your new buckets along with your aquariumís rocks and filter. Pumps, heaters and other tank accessories can be packed separately as normal. 

Your fish will be much easier to catch with less water and nowhere to hide. Gently catch your fish and place each one in its own individual bag filled ? of the way with water from the tank. Youíll want to place all of your fish in the cooler as the dark reduces stress and the insulation helps to prevent extreme temperature changes.  

When setting up your tank in your new home remember that you want to get your fish back in their familiar habitat as soon as possible. Start by adding the water and rocks from your buckets. Youíll want to hold off on setting up any complex decorations until your fish are in the tank and a few days to settle down. Youíll just want to add any live plants you may have and a place or two for your fish to hide.

Top off your tank with the appropriate type of water your fish and consider using a bacterial additive to support your fish's ecosystem as they adjust to the big move. Watch the readings on your water closely for the next month and do not add new fish until acclimated. You will also want to hold off on feeding until your water reaches proper levels. 

I'll be honest tís not the simplest process to move with fish but itís also not the most difficult. And if youíre a fish enthusiast itís well worth the effort to keep your beautiful friends happy. With some proper planning and some help from your partner or a friend moving your fish can be a smooth, stress-free experience.
